Introduction:
After participating in dance for a couple of weeks now, a task has being assigned to evaluate the likelihood of taking up dance once leaving Year 12. Exercise, sport and physical activity play an important role in many people’s lives. Today, there are many factors which can affect an individual’s motives to want to participate in a certain sport or activity. Such factors can consist of the individual’s body image and or self-concept, the individual’s body type and or physical activity and it may even come down to their beliefs, values and attitudes. Stereotypes can play a big part toward an individual’s willingness to par take in a sport. A definition of a stereotype, sourced by Oxford Dictionaries, states that a stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing (oxforddictionaries, 2014). Dance is an exceptional example of a stereotype as the fixed idea and belief is that it is a girl’s activity, which only girls participate in. In order to comprehend such concepts, it is vital to gain an understanding of the individual and structural level of Figueroa’s Framework.
